Cpl. David Braun from CFB Shilo with the 2nd Battalion,  Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, Kapyong Barracks, was killed as the result of a suicide bombing incident in Kandahar city. Three other soldiers were injured but their injuries have been reported as non-life threatening. Also killed in the bombing was a young Afghan girl. Braun's death is the 27th since Canada deployed troops to Afghanistan in 2002.

Braun was driving in a LAV-3 light armoured vehicle and eyewitness reports indicate that the vehicle along with a G-Wagon utility vehicle burned for several hours following the huge explosion. Witnesses say the explosion was heard throughout Kandahar indicating that a huge amount of explosives were used. Several reports say a local Taliban group has already claimed responsibility for the attack.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered condolences to the family of Cpl. Braun and reiterated Canada' s ongoing commitment to "make a meaningful contribution to the lives of the Afghan people".

The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Minister of National Defence in a statement also extended his deepest condolences to family and friends of Cpl. Braun.
