Discovery Communications Inc. (DCI), the brains behind such television channels as Animal Planet, The Learning Channel (TLC) and The various Discovery Channels has announced plans for the creation of the Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter Fund, which will be affectionately shortened to "The Crikey Fund."

The Fund will be established "to honor Steve's passion and exuberance for conservation and the animal kingdom and is expected to provide a way for people from across the globe to make contributions in Steve's honour to support wildlife protection, education and conservation", according to a press release.

The Crikey Fund will also provide support to Steve's Australia Zoo in Beewah, Australia, as well as educational support for his children, Bindi and Bob Irwin.

Irwin who died earlier this week after a stingray's barb pierced his chest causing massive cardia arrest. Contrary to several media reports, the Crocodile Hunter did not attempt to remove the barb before he died. Tributes and condolences continue to pour in from across the globe as fans and admirers of the animal protector and conservationist mourn his loss.

Irwin's father, Bob told reporters in Australia yesterday that the family had declined a state funeral explaining that his son would not have wanted such pomp and circumstance. Irwin Sr. said a private family funeral will be held within one week and a memorial service for members of the public will occur within two weeks.

The Queensland government have set up a webpage for those who would like to send their condolences directly to Irwin's family at www.qld.gov.au/announcements/steve_irwin.html

DCI will release more details regarding donations to "The Crikey Fund" at a later date.
