Interim Liberal Leader Michel Samson is accusing Rodney MacDonald's government of keeping gas prices in Nova Scotia at artifically inflated prices despite the province's gas regulations system which was implemented last July.
After the price of gas dropped by a mere .06 cents on Thursday Samson accused the government of refusing to lower prices to reflect the actual price of gas which has been steadily dropping since August. Prices across the province have been set to 92.2 to 95.9 cents per litre. Prices in New Brunswick and PEI however are as low as 85.5. “Under regulation, Nova Scotians are paying the highest gas prices in the Maritimes,” says Samson. “I don’t think any Nova Scotian wants to pay more than our Maritime cousins for the same product under the same type of system.”
Samson also pointed out that Thursday's price adjustment was the second time the government has refused to lower prices to reflect the general drop everywhere else. In fact, Service Nova Scotia Minister Jamie Muir admitted that last month his department kept prices high despite an obvious drop in the New York Harbour spot price. Samson reiterated his party's call to return to a competitive market system and said, “It’s clear gas regulation is not working for Nova Scotians. This government is simply not interested in ensuring its prices reflect what is happening in the global market or even in the local Maritime market. As a result, Nova Scotians are paying some of the highest gas prices in the country.” |
