FED UP WITH THE RACE CARD Print E-mail

Alex J Walling Let’s get this out in the open.

There are many bad, vile, and vicious black men and women.

There are many in the metro area who deal in drugs and other criminal activity.

By the same token there are many terrible white dudes. My earliest memories of such a character would be Richard Speck, who killed eight nurses in Chicago on July 14, 1966.

Charles Whitman did damage from the University of Texas 27-story tower, on August 1, 1966 when he killed 15 and wounded 31 others before he was killed by the cops.

I could produce a long list of white boys such as Jeffery Dalhmer, John Gacy and more.

So the fact is both white and black and native and any other kinds of people are not immune to crime and prosecution.

But in Halifax it seems when a black person is charged or accused by the cops, I keep hearing ‘racism’.

What a cop out!

The latest is the Corey  Wright Fan club who made front page headlines this week with front page stories in both daily papers saying ‘Help an innocent black man falsely accused by Halifax police’.

The story goes on to quote Wright’s mom, Valerie, as saying her son did not murder US sailor Damon Crooks during an early morning downtown brawl on November 4th.

Then, Valerie Wright came out with this beauty “Don’t you know that Nova Scotia is one of the most racist places?”

Let’s stop or start here.

First of all the obvious and that is of course Corey Wright is presumed innocent and will be until the end of the trial.  That’s a given. But by the same token, so are the police.

Many of us are fed up, that every time, or that’s what it seems, a black person is picked up, we hear the race card and charges against the police.

What a crock.

Black men like their white brothers do commit crime.

Sure, there may have been a case or two or three where the black man got screwed but probably a lot more where a white man got done in by the cops.

I get the daily police reports and on most days the cops tend to over 100 cases and on weekends we are talking about 200-250, if not more per day.   Total up those numbers and they add up over the weeks, months and years.

And like Canada Post the cops be it HRM or RCMP get over 99% right.

Now, Wright’s family wants him freed until the case is heard in court.  Come on, get serious.  White, black or multi coloured, a person’s past has to be considered in such a decision and for the protection of the public.

While Venny D (Wright’s rapper name) and his family would love to have him out from having breakfast behind bars on a daily basis, there’s the matter of his past record.

If you didn’t know about it, four years ago this person knifed a Gottigen street barber (Matthew Barton) 14 times and a second victim was severely wounded during the same assault.  He also told the judge at sentencing that he would ‘change his ways’.  Time and the courts will tell if he has. (Please note, I am presuming he is innocent)

I don’t care what colour he is but that record alone keeps him locked up until the case comes to court.

Now, the Venne D fan club (mostly family and friends) put out a poster saying “Society please, don’t condemn a man to life because of his past”. And the picture shows Wright holding what is believed to be his infant daughter.

Nice touch.  But speaking for journalist balance why not a poster of the victim of the 14-stabs wounds, just to balance things out.

When Corey Wright goes to trial I’m sure that his ‘past indiscretions’ will not be a factor as most lawyers are able to get the crown to deal with the current charge, plus he has been sentenced for his attack on the barber and the other victim.

The poster, as seen on the front pages of the dailies, states “Help and innocent Black Man Falsely Accused by Halifax Police.”

Two things that spring out at me and they are, why the word black?  Why not ‘an innocent man’?  And, this falsely accused by Halifax Police, well that sounds good doesn’t it, especially if you want to play the race card.

As a taxpayer citizen I would and do believe that while the cops don’t win all their cases, they also just don’t accuse people of first degree murder, as in this case, without evidence and lots of it.

No, you and I don’t know what the evidence is and really that is none of our business, yet.

There are a lot of charges when a person dies from a homicide that can be laid from manslaughter, to second degree murder to first degree murder and the later is the most serious.  I would like to believe, be it Corey Wright or anyone else who gets charged with such a serious offense, is a prime candidate.

Now Wright’s mom says ‘my son is innocent’.  Tell me, have you ever heard a mother saying her son is guilty?

Valerie Wright says she is compiling a lawsuit against the HRM boys.  Let me tell M’s Wright that anyone can talk about doing such but to get evidence, go to trail and win such a case is another matter. And while Jerry McGuire said “show me the money” I challenge M’s Wright to ‘show me the evidence”.

In regards to her comments that ‘Nova Scotia is one of the most racist places?” again let’s take the comment from different perspective.

Other than Toronto, I believe that Halifax has the largest black population in the country so you are going to get more friction between black and whites, etc.

I lived 22 years in Quebec City and the only time I saw a black person was in the summer tourist time.

Ten years in Newfoundland (1978-87) and I don’t ever recall seeing a black man in Corner Brook.

None in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where I spent 12 months of my life from 1987-88.

But out west there are problems with the native population, in Vancouver there’s a large “Asian population’.  Every area has potential conflicts and that is part of life.

Another dandy comment from the ‘freecoreywright’ group was the line  ...”The American sailors come here and treat us like s—t….they think because we’re on the East Coast, we’re like Newfoundland or something.”

Excuse me.

What a generalization, don’t you think?  Just like all black men (most of them) are not bad people the same applies to American sailors.  I owned a business on the waterfront for three years and had not a single problem with sailors of any kind.

And, talk about an ignorant and discriminatory remarks towards Newfoundlanders.

What’s wrong with Newfoundlanders? Again, I spent a decade of my life in that province and I loved it.  That remark shows ignorance and a blatant lack of education and I don’t care if they person is white, black or multi coloured.

Sure, mistakes have been done in the past as in the Donald Marshall situation but the cops get it right 99% of the time.

Time will tell if they get it “Wright” this time.
