Glasgow's bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games is quickly going up in smoke after Scotland's senior national basketball teams indicated they are prepared to vote against Glasgow's bid, and support Halifax instead. The news comes as we learn Scotland's senior national basketball teams are on the brink of financial crisis due to sportscotland cutting financial support. The cut in funding is directly related to basketball not being included in Glasgow 2014's Commonwealth Games plans.
"The Commonwealth funding was a bonus, but these cuts are a blow, after having proved we can do well," says Bill McInnes, chairman of Basketball Scotland. "It showed what we can do when we do have better funding." But Glasgow's woes are yet another feather in Halifax's Games bid - which many in the Commonwealth view as the frontrunner in the fight to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Unlike Glasgow, support for the 2014 Commonwealth Games has been very strong, with 2 recent polls showing more than 80 per cent support for Halifax's bid across the province. With the future of Glasgow's bid now uncertain it gives Halifax another boost on the world stage as a world class city with open and welcoming arms. |
