Halifax & Province Withdraw Support for Commonwealth Games |

**UPDATE # 2** The province of Nova Scotia apologized to the Mayor and Halifax Regional councillors after the province's announcement of withdrawl from the bidding to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, was released earlier than expected.
**UPDATE** Unconfirmed reports coming from City Hall are indicating that Halifax Regional Council had not been informed by the Province of Nova Scotia of their intent to withdraw support from the Commonwealth Game bid process. Several councillors, upon learning about a news release posted on the province's website, abruptly left chambers in protest. MORE TO COME.. The province of Nova Scotia and the Halifax Regional Municipality have withdrawn their support from the bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.Halifax Regional Municipality Mayor Peter Kelly and Barry Barnett, NS Minister of Health Promotion and Protection made the announcment in a news conference in Halifax today.
City council members earlier this morning had been meeting in-camera to discuss whether or not Halifax would proceed with the bid process. All along rumours have been circulating that the costs would be too exorbitant to continue with this city's desire to host the 2014 Games and today a majority of council members agreed. Minister of Health Promotion and Protection Barry Barnet says independent analysis has shown the risks associated with pursuing the Games were simply too high and could compromise the province's fiscal position.
Mayor Peter Kelly says he was also unwilling to jeopardize the municipality's finances. |
