Growing Pet Food Recall - Comprehensive List *Update # 2* Print E-mail
Written by Staff
Tuesday, 03 April 2007

Update #1 added Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 9 pm.

Update #2 added Thursday, April 5, 2007 at 10 pm.

Updates can be found at end of article.

Following the announcement in early March issued by Menu Pet Foods concerning a massive recall of wet cat and dog food because of the presence of toxins in the food, other pet food suppliers are also recalling specific brands on a voluntary or precautionary basis. Because the list of recalled pet food is expanding on an almost daily basis, confusion prevails in pet owners throughout North America.

HalifaxLive.com in an effort to supply the latest information in one place has put together the list of currently recalled pet food brands as of Tuesday, April 3. 2007. If more pet food brands are added to the recall list, HalifaxLive will update accordingly.

April 5, 2007: Menu Pet Food has updated their list of recalled pet products. Please visit their website at  http://www.menufoods.com/recall/

Symptoms of kidney failure in cats and dogs are:

  • loss of appetite,
  • lethargy,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhea,
  • changes in water consumption
  • changes in urination.

If your pet is exhibiting symptoms as outlined above, have them examined by a veterinarian even if they have not been fed a food from the recall list.

The following is a list of other pet food suppliers who have voluntarily recalled specific brands on a strictly precautionery basis.

Hill’s Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food. This cat food is available only from a Veterinarian: http://www.hillspet.com/menu_foods/mdRecall_040107_en_GB.htm

  • 4 lb. bag, U.S. & Canada UPC code 52742 42770
  • 10 lb. bag, U.S. & Canada UPC code 52742 42790

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company: http://www.purina.com/

  • All sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date.** This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.
  • Purina’s 5.3-ounce Mighty Dog® pouch products, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution on March 16 as part of the Menu Foods recall. ONLY Mighty Dog pouch products and specific date codes of ALPO Prime Cuts canned dog food are being recalled.
  • Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall – including ALPO Prime Cuts dry.
  • No other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply.
  • However, because of a product name change in early 2007, this voluntary recall also covers one item with the same date code labeled as ALPO® Prime Entrees in Gravy with Chicken, Rotini Pasta & Vegetables.

Del Monte Pet Products has voluntarily recalled several foods and treats for cats and dogs. To add even more confusion to pet owners, each product recalled falls within a specific product code and 'Best Before' date. Listed here are the names of the recalled products. For an extensive list of codes and 'best before' dates, a good list can be found here:
