Walling George Dubya said ‘Bring it on,” I say bring them on.

We’re talking about the Guardian Angels the American volunteer clan that ‘helps’ keep crime down or reduce it in a city. The Angels, an unarmed citizens on patrol group, will have their founder Curtis Sliwa come to town.  The end of October is the date and he will be accompanied by members of the Boston and Toronto chapters.

The Guardian Angels are known for wearing garishingly grabbed red berets and red-satin jackets.  The break up fights, make citizen’s arrests where they think crime has occurred and will hold people until the cops arrive.

I for one say, ‘come on down’, or is it come on up to Halifax.  I listened to the CJCH Hotline show on Tuesday and the majority of callers certainly would welcome them.  CJ host Rick Howe had their leader on the program. He is Curtis Sliwa who, believe it or not, is a radio talk show host on the biggest talk radio station in the USA, that being WABC radio in New York City.

Bringing the Angels to Halifax is not an anti Halifax Police matter.  I don’t believe the cops can solve all crimes or be everywhere.  It seems some callers to Howe’s show feel the cops should be everywhere and catch everyone.  Grow up, it doesn’t work that way.

Mayor Kelly doesn’t like to hear this but we are in the biggest crime infested city (per capita) in this country.  Sure, Kelly will tell us that crime is on the decrease but the fact is, youth crime, the kind we are talking about, the muggings, beatings, stabbings by youth, is on the upswing and it seems one cannot go a day without reading about an incident involving these punks.

There is no doubt the Guardian Angels would be welcomed and their presence alone would be a deterrent and a major one at that.  Do you think three or four punks would jump on someone if a group of Angels were within sight?  I don’t think so.

I keep hearing that ‘we should be able to handle our own problems’ by some who are not crazy about the Angels.  The fact is, we cannot handle our own problems and the newspaper accounts tell that story.

If that was so an old lady (66 years old) would not get a beating on the Halifax Commons by 15-16 year old girls?

A kid from Citadel High wouldn’t be stabbed in trying to help someone.  And so on and so forth.

While a Halifax chapter may be headed by a person from out of town the bulk of the group would be local citizens.  Prospective Guardian Angels must go through a three-month training and orientation program before joining.

I for one am fed up with the talk about ‘doing something’.  We’ve had it with Mayor Kelly’s ‘round table’, etc.  This group represents both action and a start.

Bring them on.

Speaking of Peter Kelly there’s a website called www.dumpkelly.com and it’s getting good re-action.  The mayor doesn’t like it.  That’s simply too bad.  He got into power because people were getting fed up of Walter Fitzgerald.

He came in seeming like a man of action.  He has turned out to be a disappointment and has become a waffle.  He waffles on this issue and on that issue and can’t seem to make up his mind.

That is not leadership.
